MINUTES OF
Borough of Swarthmore - Public Safety Committee
August 15, 2006 Meeting
In attendance were Council Members Bech and Parker, Mayor Gerner, and Police Chief Craig.
I. PUBLIC COMMENT.
A. Ms. Joanna Jacobs of North Chester Road provided the Committee with a brief report of her recent experiences in Bulgaria. Ms. Jacobs politely but firmly declined an invitation to consider re-joining Borough Council.
II. POLICE DEPARTMENT.
A. The Police Chief recommended that parking be allowed on the 100 block of Kenyon (between Yale and Bowdoin) on only one side of the street. The Committee agreed, and Mr. Bech will ask some of the residents for their views on which side should disallow parking.
B. A resident previously inquired about whether left turns onto Baltimore Pike could be allowed for vehicles traveling north on North Chester Road. The Committee has concerns about safety and oncoming traffic, and does not wish to pursue the matter further. Also, it was noted that left turns onto Baltimore Pike are possible from Oakdale.
C. A resident previously inquired about whether the Borough could post a sign on North Chester Road near Ogden to warn north-bound traffic of the upcoming traffic light at the intersection with Swarthmore Avenue. The Department will investigate the matter.
D. The Police Chief reported on various repairs that have been necessary with respect to police vehicles.
E. The Police Chief also reported on the schedule for upcoming meetings with College representatives, including a new Dean and dormitory resident assistants.
F. A resident previously expressed concerns about traffic on Swarthmore Avenue between Cedar Lane and Baltimore Pike. The Department will investigate.
III. FIRE COMPANY.
A. There was a brief discussion of how the Swarthmore Fire & Protective Association is organized, funded, and staffed.
IV. OTHER.
A. Ms. Parker noted that she has received several copies of the 2006 edition of the Delaware County Bar Association Elder Law handbook. A copy will be placed in the Library, and the Mayor will also keep a copy to use as a reference.
B. There was brief discussion of concerns about potential changes to flight paths to and from the Philadelphia International Airport.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
