September 22, 2009 Meeting Minutes of the Swarthmore Advisory Council

Present: Melissa Lewicki, Susan Kelly, Phil Coleman, Gina Eberly, Nancy Crickman,
Beth Murray, Denise Disney and Jennifer Smuts

Old Business:

August minutes approved with minor corrections.

LCCP: Work day on Saturday, September 26th. Clean up and preparation of tree planting area. Twenty trees have been donated. Some will be planted this Fall and some in the Spring. Phil presented information on the status of the drain in the wetland area of the park. Background information was included from e-mail correspondence with Art McGarity and Jim Taylor. They both see no problem with removal of the pipe because it is not now functioning as originally planned. Art did suggest contacting Beth Svenson who was the consulting biologist on the original wetland plantings to see what impact the pipe removal might have on the surrounding plants. Without the pipe, the wetland would probably hold more water.

RECS: Phil will be meeting with Jane on Friday to discuss Renewable Energy Credits.

EAC News: Melissa expressed some concern about how well EAC news is reaching the public. She will make an effort to get news in both the Swarthmorean and on the borough TV channel.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory: Beth asked about the status of the project. Phil will get in touch with Cloe, the Temple graduate student who is serving as our liaison.

Borough Hall Solar System: The hallway display is not currently on line. Melissa will check to see how to get the system up and running.

Swarthmore Borough 2010 Budget: Melissa asked for requests for projects or materials that EAC would like to submit as part of the borough 2010 budget. She will be our representative at the budget meeting and will also talk to Jane about our requests. Melissa asked for a one page letter to help her present these requests. Some suggestions for funding included $100 for membership in the PA. EAC, gator bags and tree tubes for LCCP and perhaps funding for the removal of a large dead tree in the wetland.

Biking Task Force: The committee will consists of nine members and will be in existence for one year. They are presently looking for members. Contact Ralph Jacobs, if interested. Jennifer Smuts, who was visiting the EAC meeting, was interested in joining both EAC and the task force and would serve as the EAC liaison.

New Business:

Wren Grant: SRS received the $300 grant. The money will fund the purchase of a rain barrel, sign and educational material.

Denise suggested helping Rutledge purchase a tree for their new street tree program.

Next meeting: Joint EAC potluck dinner meeting on October 27th.
