Bonnie Smith, Facilitator and Recording
The second joint meeting of the Environmental Advisory Councils of Rutledge,
Swarthmore, Nether Providence and Rose Valley was held in Rutledge Borough Hall.
Diane McGaughey was a most gracious host and there was a potluck supper
beforehand, as several had suggested. Diane created a delicious and lovely event.
Thank you Diane!

The group decided that we should form teams to begin work on projects of mutual
interest. The teams formed were:
• Stream Stewardship / Storm Water Management Committee
• Greenhouse Gas / Energy Committee
• Education, Outreach and Fundraising Committee
• Managing and Enhancing Open Spaces Committee
Meeting participants volunteered for one or more of the committees and discussed
ideas for getting underway. The committees are open to additional volunteers.
Each group will choose its own leadership. During the session each team agreed on
some initial steps.
Stream Stewardship / Storm Water Management Committee
The primary focus of this committee is organizing the recently funded rain barrel
workshops, aimed at reducing storm water runoff in all four communities. It will
work closely with Anne Murphy, Director of the CRC Watersheds Association.

EAC participation in local accomplishments since this meeting includes:
• A successful invasive species workshop held on November 7, 2009 by the Rose
Valley EAC, covered in both the Swarthmorean and the Town Talk.
• A check presentation event on November 6, 2009 hosted by PECO celebrating
five years of its support of open space. Funding will go to local workshops on
storm water management, including rain barrel workshops and subsidies for
rain barrels for all four EACs. A photo ran in the Swarthmorean.
• Roger Latham was a featured guest on November 30, 2009 on WHYY’s Radio
Times with Marty Moss‐Coane, speaking about the importance of managing deer
populations in urban and suburban communities and the breadth of the
environmental damage that not doing so has already caused. The program is
archived as a podcast at www.whyy.org/podcast/113009_100630.mp3.
• Rutledge’s tree planting got underway and was covered in the Town Talk with a
photo.
• Swarthmore College has begun implementing its deer management plan in the
Crum Woods with the first annual bow hunt followed by a sharpshooter cull.
The next joint meeting of the four EACs is planned for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
February 23, 2010, at the Nether Providence Township Building (214 Sykes Lane,
Wallingford).
