Paying taxes:

The Borough tax bill is mailed at the beginning of February of every calendar year.   Taxes and fees paid by March 31 receive a 2% discount off the face amount.   Taxes and fees paid after May 31 will be assessed a 10% penalty over the face amount.

Payment can be mailed directly to the post office box shown on the bill.   Additionally, the Tax Collector schedules several dates before the end of the discount period when taxes can be paid in person.   Check your tax bill and /or local media sources for location, dates and times. Requests for tax duplicates should be made directly to the Tax Collector, either by mail, fax or via telephone.   Taxes may not be paid at the Swarthmore Borough Administration Office.

Borough Taxes and Fees:

Swarthmore’s millage rate for 2008 real estate taxes is 4.419 mills.   Real estate tax is determined by multiplying the millage rate times the assessed value of your home and dividing by 1,000.   The assessed value is shown on the tax bill.

Example: For a house assessed at $250,000, taxes would be computed as follows:   $250,000  X   4.419/ 1,000 = $1104.75

The Borough trash/recycling fee for 2008 is $250 per dwelling unit.

The Borough sewer fee is $4.75 per thousand gallons of water used in the prior year.   The gallonage used is shown on the tax bill.

Every Borough resident over the age of 18 is assessed a $5 Per Capita tax.   Any single person with an income below $3,200 per year and married couple with a combined income below $4,000 per year will be exempted from the tax upon proof of income.

Local Services Tax

Swarthmore levies a $52 per person Local Services Taxon any person, over the age of 18, who earns more than $12,000 while working in the Borough.   This tax is administered by an outside collection agency and does not appear on the Borough tax bill.  Refund forms are available in the Borough Office for those who have had the tax withheld in error.

County and School District Taxes

Delaware County and the Walllingford-Swarthmore School District levy separate real estate taxes that are not included on your Swarthmore real estate tax bill.
